  • Execution environments: Build and use container-based automation execution environments.
  • Configuration settings: Adjust Ansible and ansible-navigator configuration and troubleshoot issues.

Requirements:

You should already have RHCE-level Ansible knowledge. Online participants need a stable internet connection and a laptop or desktop for the live AAP labs, because EX374 skills are learnt by doing the labs.

Red Hat recommends Red Hat Enterprise Linux Automation with Ansible (RH294, now AU294) and RHCE on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 or later, or equivalent Ansible experience, before DO374/EX374.

Developing Advanced Automation with Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform (DO374): 9 chapters

1. Develop Playbooks with Ansible Automation Platform 2

This is the first of nine chapters in Red Hat's Developing Advanced Automation with Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform course (DO374, now listed as AU374). You develop playbooks with Ansible Automation Platform 2 and follow Red Hat's recommended practices while doing it.

  • Develop Ansible Playbooks with automation content navigator (ansible-navigator).
  • Apply recommended practices so that automation stays effective and efficient.
  • Use Git: clone a repository, then create, modify and push files.
2. Manage Ansible Content Collections and Automation Execution Environments

Many playbooks need content collections that are not part of ansible-core. Here you run such playbooks, taking the collections from an existing execution environment or from automation hub.

  • Run playbooks that use content collections not included in ansible-core.
  • Use the collections supplied by an existing automation execution environment.
  • Download and install collections from automation hub.
3. Run Playbooks with Automation Controller

The chapter explains what automation controller is and shows how to run the playbooks you developed with automation content navigator in it.

  • Create machine credentials for inventory hosts and a source control credential.
4. Work with Ansible Configuration Settings

You examine and adjust the configuration of Ansible and of automation content navigator, both to make development simpler and to troubleshoot problems.

  • Use configuration settings to troubleshoot issues.
5. Manage Inventories

This chapter covers the advanced inventory features of Ansible.

  • Structure host and group variables across multiple files.
  • Use special variables to override the host, port or remote user for a specific host.
  • Set up directories that hold several host variable files.
  • Write dynamic inventories, which is an EX374 exam objective.
6. Manage Task Execution

You control how playbooks execute their tasks and make that execution more efficient.

  • Control privilege escalation.
  • Run selected tasks from a playbook.
  • Optimise how tasks are executed.
7. Transform Data with Filters and Plug-ins

Filters and plug-ins are used to populate, manipulate and manage the data held in variables.

  • Populate variables with data from external sources using lookup plug-ins.
  • Use lookup and query functions in playbooks and templates.
  • Build loops over more than simple lists by using lookup plug-ins and filters.
  • Inspect, validate and manipulate variables that contain networking information.
8. Coordinate Rolling Updates

Rolling updates change a few hosts at a time, which keeps downtime low. The chapter uses advanced Ansible features to manage them while keeping playbooks simple and maintainable.

  • Manage rolling updates so that downtime is kept to a minimum.
  • Delegate a task so that it runs on a different host from the one being managed.
  • Control whether gathered facts are delegated to the managed host or the controlling host.
9. Create Ansible Content Collections and Automation Execution Environments

In the final chapter you write your own content collections, publish them, put them into a custom automation execution environment and run them from automation controller.

  • Create and publish an Ansible Content Collection.
  • Build a custom automation execution environment that includes your collection.
  • Upload the execution environment to automation hub.
  • Run playbooks with that execution environment in automation controller.
