What is WhatsApp's Advanced Chat Privacy?

Advanced Chat Privacy is a setting that limits how content can leave a specific chat. WhatsApp announced it on 23 April 2025, describing it as a way to "block others from exporting chats, auto-downloading media to their phone, and using messages for AI features."

Two points that many articles get wrong:

• It is set per chat, not for your whole account. You turn it on inside an individual chat or a group, not under the main Privacy settings.
• It applies to everyone in that chat. The point is to control what other people can do with what you share, in addition to your own copy.

Messages on WhatsApp were already end-to-end encrypted in transit. This setting deals with the next risk: what happens to the content once it reaches someone's phone.

What does Advanced Chat Privacy block, and what doesn't it?

WhatsApp called this "the first version" of the feature, so check the app for any additional protections added since. The key idea stays the same: it removes the easy, bulk ways of copying a conversation, but it can't stop a determined person who already has access to the chat.

How do you turn on Advanced Chat Privacy?

Update WhatsApp first from the Play Store or App Store. Then:

1. Open the individual chat or group you want to protect.
2. Tap the contact's or group's name at the top of the screen.
3. Scroll down and tap Advanced chat privacy.
4. Switch the toggle on.

The steps are the same on Android and iPhone. Repeat them for each chat you want to cover. If you don't see the option, your app may not be updated yet, or in some groups the admin settings may limit who can change chat settings.

When should you use it?

Use it for chats where the content would cause harm if it were exported or shared in bulk:

• Large or mixed groups, such as housing societies, alumni or community groups, where you don't know every member.
• Work groups that discuss customers, pricing or internal plans. WhatsApp is not a replacement for approved company tools, but this reduces casual leakage.
• Family chats where people share ID documents, medical reports or bank details.
• Any chat with someone you don't fully trust, where an exported history could be misused or taken out of context.

Does it protect you from malicious files?
